You are pleading more for critical thinking than philosophy.

Indeed philosophy is an exercise for critical thinking but it doesn’t teach it. By reading the work of those great minds you brother your perspective and also you may desire to develop your own opinion on the matter.

Furthermore a true debate requires empathy in order to accept the point of view of another one.
