What does it mean to be human?

I’m no fool, if centuries of bright minds couldn’t deliver a proper answer, I don’t even dare to consider I ever will. Still, I have some ideas that work for me and I would like to share them with you.

For me, being human means to make mistakes, a lot of them. I admit, I had my share part and I am convinced that a lot awaits me in the future. I despise perfection because it means you can’t change and nothing moves, everything is the same, everything is boring. I love mistakes because I can grow through them. Yes, it is painful to commit one but … aren’t we all sinners entitled to redemption? There cannot be light without darkness (use this for your next Instagram photo description). Once you know something is wrong you know now how to not do it again. We are weak and we might not be able to forgive ourselves or others for their foolishness and mistakes but we should try at least, and if we can’t, I know from my experience, time heals all wounds… thus you will still have the marks.

Being human means to love. Life is suffering, and hedonists are just disillusioned because once you go out in the real world pain will hit you in the face. In a place full of ugliness and misery one can choose to love but that takes courage and a lot of power. Don’t mistake love for sexual attraction (we don’t want a Planet-scale orgy, or do we?). Ancient Greeks knew it better and distinguished 6 types of love: eros, philia, ludus, agape, pragma and philautia.

We are surrounded by chaos, in fact, if you think deeply for a second or two, one may realize that he or she cannot control in fact anything not even herself/himself. It is our deepest desire to make sense of everything that happens, all must have a purpose, a cause and an effect. This is what we call order. Being human means to find the perfect equilibrium between this antagonist forces chaos and order, too much of one or another can turn to be fatal.

Being human means to be free. Freedom doesn’t mean you can do everything you want whenever you want (I know I should eat the whole chocolate, but I swear, it was marvellous). Freedom implies a lot of responsibility and few will take up the challenge. Be free to think, act and create and as a consequence add something that will be beneficial for the world, your community and oneself. Being human means respecting others right to freedom and accept its manifestations if it does no harm.

If God is omnipotent omniscient and omnipresent he lacks something that humans have, he lacks limitations. The physical world bounds us but is the way our divine spark can manifest and exist. Suffering is the condition of existence and instead of denying it, one should accept it. Being human, in the end, means to suffer but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a good life.
