I find very entertainig your parallel with the North mythology. Furthermore I do agree that is the duty of the parent to raise a successful child, well socialized. However, I might got it wrong, and is my fault if I did so, but using words to make the kid feel bad if the did something wrong throughout lowering his self esteem ,telling him he is stupid for example, might not be the best approach on the long term. Making him responsible (to assume the consequences of his action and differentiate between good and bad) takes much more time and resources but it might be more worh it.
